Let's get to know each other.
Your first visit to our physical therapists in Kansas City will consist of an initial consultation and examination. We will take a full history of your condition and discuss your concerns. As we work through your case, we take into consideration who you are as a person: your unique musculoskeletal issues, your needs, your lifestyle, and your goals. We then take you through a series of functional movement screens, muscle testing, joint range of motion assessments, orthopedic screens, neurological examination and more, all used to better guide us as we develop your treatment plan. We're set on getting you back to life, not just getting you out of pain.
Our physical therapists will explain the findings of your examination in terminology that is easy to understand and relates to your specific case. We include information that may be contributing to the problem and inform you of the course of treatment, as well as what we can provide you. Your doctor will work with you to set short-term and long-term goals and give you realistic expectations regarding your treatment plan.
Your first few visits will be based around reducing and managing your symptoms. This often involves education about muscular imbalances, movement pattern alterations, and habit modifications. Most of the treatment interventions we provide in the beginning stages are aimed at pain management. Our physical therapists' goals in this phase are to reduce the intensity, frequency, and duration of your pain and/or symptoms to provide you with relief throughout your day and allow further interventions a chance for successful implementation. This phase can last anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks depending on your condition.
Once we have been able to reduce or eliminate your pain, our goals shift to restoration and improvement of function. These new goals may be based around work duties, activities of daily living, recreational activities, exercise, competition, or overall performance. Pain may go away quickly, however, the dysfunctions that caused the symptoms often remain; research shows that it takes a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks for lasting neurologic change and tissue adaption. We must recover normal range or motion, strength, endurance, and tissue quality to ensure full and lasting recovery. If treatment is abandoned too soon, the likelihood of injury recurrence increases significantly.
At F.I.T. Muscle & Joint Clinic, you will be taken through some form of rehabilitation exercises at each appointment with your doctor. Our Kansas City physical therapists utilize exercises such as DNS and functional movements to complement the hands on soft tissue therapy provided by your therapist. This assists in permanence of tissue and neurological adaptation. We will equip you with exercises you can do on your own to continue maintaining stability long after your injury has been rehabilitated to limit your reliance on us.
Once full recovery of function has been reached, we can transition to maintenance care to prevent recurrences, catch dysfunction quickly and early, and keep you moving well. We are always available for your continued care whether dealing with re-injury or a new injury. We want to be a forever resource for you! Consistent check-ins with our physical therapists can help keep those little aches from turning into big pains.
