What to Expect with Physical Therapy in Kansas City, From Your First Visit to the End

What should you expect from physical therapy in Kansas City? From your first visit to the end, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know.

First thing’s first: you should know that not all patients have direct access to a physical therapist. This means that in most states, including Missouri, doctors must write a prescription for his or her patient to undergo physical therapy.

However, Kansas is a direct access state. That means that you don’t need a referral or prescription to visit us!

Your first physical therapy visit

At your initial visit, our physical therapists will complete a thorough evaluation and determine the best course of treatment for you, including the optimal number of visits, duration of therapy, and appropriate techniques. We will work with you on a plan of care that is right for your specific condition and lifestyle.

Factors to consider for your unique treatment program can include how you were injured, when your injury occurred, and the activities you want to get back to. Additionally, your physical therapist will look at your financial situation, work responsibilities, and family life to optimize your physical therapy in Kansas City.

What is physical therapy in Kansas City like?

At F.I.T. Muscle & Joint Clinic, we combine hands-on treatments with rehabilitation exercises as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan. We spend time with you treating soft tissue and joint restrictions and lead you through exercises tailored to your specific problem that will help with pain and performance.

Between visits, your therapist will give you “homework exercises” to complete on your own. It’s important to keep up with your home exercise program as prescribed. Research studies show that people who are compliant with their physical therapy plan of care, including therapy attendance and home exercise program, have significantly better outcomes than those that are inconsistent with their care.

Relying solely on the treatment received in the clinic will not be enough to invoke a change in your body. It takes a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks for a neurological change to happen and high repetitions of proper movement to cause lasting change.

Progression of physical therapy in Kansas City

As you continue through therapy and begin making improvements, you will likely be seen less frequently than you were at the beginning of treatment. You will then reach your point of discharge, which may be the initial six weeks that your primary doctor prescribed, or shorter or longer given your progress.

However, your progress does not stop upon discharge from F.I.T. Your physical therapist will discuss a discharge plan with you that will likely include certain exercises to continue as you progress back into your normal activities.

Remember, if you don’t use it - you lose it. To prevent another injury, or a relapse of the same injury, you need to keep up with the treatment that your therapist has taken you through over the last few weeks.

You can also have periodic check-ins with your F.I.T. doctor to make sure the little things don’t become big things. If you ever have questions regarding your home program, the doctors at F.I.T. welcome your return to keep you in the game.
